I had a middle aged friend that was a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine…?

Posted by admin on Jun 30, 2009

I told her I had received a flu shot. She warned me that her friend had gotten cancer and died from a flu shot. Do flu shots give people cancer?

Uhhh…are you serious?
No, no they do not. That is ridiculous. The flu vaccine doesn’t even contain a live virus.
And we don’t even know for sure what causes cell replication to go haywire – causing cancer. There is nothing AT ALL to indicate that flu vaccines cause cancer. I don’t even know where she would get such an idea.

Oh, and it’s important to mention that so-called "Doctors of naturopathic medicine" are ****NOT**** Medical Doctors in any way, shape or form. They only have a title in 5 Canadian Provences and 16 US states (ND). They have a very limited scope of practice and cannot prescribe medicine. Most places don’t even recognize them as professionals.

well your friend is, considering the field of study she’s in, gonna, sorta not be in favor of conventional medicine, but to state a flu shot gives cancer is a little, probably way overboard.

I agree… I doubt it was just the Flu shot itself, but it’s possible that they contracted the Flu from the shot and they may have found out they had cancer. I’ve never heard of the Flu causing cancer, but at this point in time, nobody has any clue what causes cancer, so researchers are grasping at any straws they can find. Heck, at this point, I’ve heard that almost everything can cause cancer, even the air you breathe and the water you drink. LOL!!

It sounds like the friend of yours doesn’t like the Flu shot (as many educated Naturopaths don’t because of the problems they cause and the limited successful cases), so she may be trying to detract people from getting it… or she might actually believe that the Flu caused her friend’s cancer. It’s hard to say for sure. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Don’t you think if it was true that millions of people would have cancer right now? I mean from getting a flu shot..

Okay, to a point I agree with Leah. It’s pretty ridiculous to say a flu shot caused someone’s cancer. And it’s unfortunate if your "DNM" friend is claiming that’s case, not only because it adds to the general public’s confusion about vaccines but also because claims like that do not reflect highly on the profession!

So forgive me hopping up on a soap box to defend the profession…
"DNM" is not the same as ND. DNMs are not certified by NABNE (the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners.) They have not written board examinations in North America, have not graduated from accredited colleges, and they cannot register as NDs until they demonstrate that their education is equivalent and then write the 2 series of board exams to show their knowledge/skills meet NABNE’s stringent requirements.

NDs are registered in all but 2 provinces in Canada (not sure about the Territories.) We’re governed by our professional colleges/associations, just like MDs. In addition, there are two (2) boards that oversee NDs – NABNE mentioned above and the BDDT-N (Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy- Naturopathy.)

NDs do, in fact, attend medical school that satisfies all of the same basic and clinical sciences that MDs take in addition to the "natural medicine" modalities. In several US states and some Canadian provinces, we’re able to prescribe medicines. We provide parenteral (IV) therapies, gynecologic exams, etc. We’re required to complete a comprehensive physical exam on every patient. We make diagnoses. And everywhere that NDs are registered, they’re recognized as primary care physicians.

Okay… hopping off soap box. As for flu vaccines… well that’s a whole other can of worms. If you’re interested, drop me an email and I’m happy to provide some unbiased information on flu vaccines and their efficacy rates.

Cheers!
