This book provides an introduction to herbalism satisfactory for the reader, and is supported by helpful articles on medical terminology, when to gather herbs, useful addresses, and more. Physicians may find that the book contains enough detail and enough references to literature and other experimental data.
The most useful part of this book – and one that offers the clearest statement of philosophy of the author – is the 4th chapter entitled “Body Systems”. This is the chapter that the reader of a specific complaint should first turn. This includes sections on eleven body systems, including the circulatory system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, ears, nose, throat and eyes, reproductive system and the system tract.
Taking the digestive system to illustrate the approach of the author, the entire section consists of 14 large pages. In the first two pages, the author explains with illustrations of anatomy and function of the digestive tract and then gives advice on general lifestyle prevention of gastrointestinal disease. The next two pages are an introduction to different types of herbs for the digestive system, the landmarks of them, liver, laxatives, emetics, demulcants, astringent and anti-spasmodic. The final paragraph of 10 pages is titled “Patterns of Digestive Disease,” in which Hoffman offers his views on the nature and potential treatments for problems ranging constipation anorexia, mouth ulcers, duodenal ulcers and gall bladder inflammation. The herbs mentioned in this chapter can then be viewed in the previous chapter, a reference to traditional herbal which devotes half a page each plant, parts used, when and how to retrieve them; its chemical constituents, actions, and preparation and dosage. I found a half page far too little, but combining this information with the rest of the book, the reader finds usually sufficient to suggest a possible remedy for the common complaints – those that usually require verification by a qualified practitioner.
The rest of the book includes chapters on “comprehensive approach” and “herbal practice.” The It explains how to gather herbs and making herbal preparations, chemical plants, the action of herbs, suggestions for a pharmacy herbal base for the home, and a therapeutic index, which lists Alphabetical conditions with the most potentially useful herbs.

Although the herbs listed are not a complete list of plants available throughout the U.S., it has so much information about those he lists only makes it well worth the money. Including how to prepare ointments, infusions, etc.

I have one side the 2002 version of the book 1996. Except for the cover design the content has remained substantially the same. This is one of the best books on herbs and herbalism. It shows the grass with a color photo for those unfamiliar with what each plant looks like. It gives a detailed description of the grass AMD exact formula of how to use separately or in combination. There are other features as how to grow and dry herbs and how it relates to a system of bodies. One of the best books available grass

The pictures and profiles on the grass are a pleasure to read and watch. I gave the book 5 stars, but there is a lack of safety information for certain plants (eg, comfrey, coltsfoot, thrush, sassafras) which seems a serious omission. Someone just starting to learn about herbs can begin to eat on a regular basis before coming through the safety elsewhere. In addition, in the section on body systems, the recipes are recommended plants accompanied by symbols that are not explained anywhere in the text (or if they are, the explanation is very well hidden because I can not find it!) Other than that, the book contains an excellent introduction to how the various body systems work and a lot of sensible advice on optimizing health (prevention not only the disease). The philosophy of herbal treatment (treating the whole person rather than treating a symptom or a disease) is discussed. Thus the therapeutic index, it is easy to find herbs that you can try for specific health needs. An interesting addition to the library herbal as long as you have other books that offer the security information that it did not!

The book I received did not cover represented, but it was the correct year. The book is very comprehensive and I enjoyed a lot of pictures to help identify plants. It is a good book for someone who is embarking herbalology. I’m not sure because I am a beginner, but I do not think it would be the point of herbs or someone who has much knowledge. Probably his most recent book that I know is used in some training courses instead of one. Overall I found it very useful. Many things in my yard that I’m just weeds are actually excellent plants for the treatment of conditions! I would never have known if I had not had this book. I love him very much and we believe it contains a wealth of knowledge:)
