Can you suggest a good course to go with Naturopathy?
Posted by admin on Nov 1, 2009
My main ambition in live is to become a Doctor of Natural Medicine. My mother thinks it would be a good idea to get a Bachelor of Medicine first and THEN get my natural medicine degree. She thinks that people would take me more seriously if I had both qualifications. I think it might be a good idea, but I want a second opinion.
Do you think it would be a waste of time?
Also, if anyone has any good recommendations for a natural medicine school in Australia, feel free to let me know =)
Cheers
"naturopathy" is superstitious nonsense. It follows that there are no "good" schools of Naturopathy, in Australia or elsewhere.
If you get a degree in Medicine, then get another degree in Naturopathy, you would destroy your professional reputation in real medicine, and you would be known as a quack.
Natural Home Remedies for Gout
Posted by admin on Oct 12, 2009
Causes and Symptoms: Gout is a disease of the joints and is a form of rheumatism. It is a constitutional disorder connected with excess of uric acid in the blood manifesting itself by inflammation of joints with deposition of urate of soda and also by morbid changes in various important organs.
Hippo crates in his Aphorisms speaks of gout as occurring most commonly in spring and autumn, and mentions the facts that women are less liable to it than men. Why the uric acid is found in excess is not understood by the allopathic physicians. Uric acid is formed in the system in the process of nutrition and is excreted by the kidneys. In a patient suffering from gout, the quantity of uric acid is found to be much more than normal. In a paroxysm of gout, the body appears to get rid of a lot of uric acid and there appears to be some relied but that is purely temporary.
Modern medicine believes gout to be hereditary since it has been found in 50 to 80 percent of the cases that the patient’s parents or grand parents suffered from the disease. The disease affects the sedentary persons more than those who lead active lives, but it is not always true. On the other hand, inadequate exercise, a luxurious manner of living, habitual over-indulgence in rich foods and especially in alcohol is the precipitating factors in the onset of the disease. Some teetotalers and vegetarians are also found to be victims of gout.
The disease is more common in mature age and in the males than females. Persons exposed to the influence of lead poisoning such as plumbers, are apt to suffer from gout. Attacks of the disease are readily excited by exposure to cold, disorders of indigestion, fatigue and injuries to particular joints.
An attack of gout may appear without warning, or there may be premonitory symptoms. Among the most common of these are disorders of the digestive organs, with a feeble and capricious appetite, flatulence, uneasiness in the right side in the region of the liver, and irritation in the urinary organs. There is also irritability, numbness and coldness in the limbs. The attack comes usually at night, usually between two and three in the morning. The affected part is found to be swollen and a deep red hue. The skin is tense and glistening and the surrounding veins are more or less distended. The attack lasts for a week or ten days during which the patient suffers from constipation, dyspepsia and extreme thirst. The urine is scanty and high coloured with a copious deposit, consisting chiefly of urates. The joint affected may become swollen but if the disease is not attended to, the swelling spreads to other joints and it becomes chronic. Joints also become enlarged and refuse to function without giving excruciating pain to the sufferer.
naturopathy believes that like all other diseases, gout is the result of inadequate excretion of the morbid and poisonous matter from the orifices of the body. The bowels, the urinary tract, the skin and the nostrils—all must expel the waste matter from the body. If they become slack and do not function properly, those substances accumulate in the body and produce gout. Life depends on healthy blood and nature has devised catarrh, diahrroea and fevers to force the human system to expel the accumulated waste matter. If these diseases are suppressed, as happens in most case when the patient takes to allopathic treatment, the poisonous and morbid matter attacks the part of the body, which is weaker than others. That is how chronic diseases are born.
The real culprit is the type of food, which we are addicted to. Our blood is chiefly alkaline and anything that tends to produce acidity should be avoided. Treating gout in any other system is chaotic. The real cause of the disease is not attack and recourse is taken to painkillers or antidoting of the poison is under taken. The Ayurvedic practitioners prohibit the intake of fruits and vegetables on the plea that they may produce cold, which is supposed to be bad for the gout and thus deprive the patient of the real cure. Doctors have some times advised patients to have their teeth or tonsils extracted under the misconception that the seat of the disease lays there. But even the excision of these has never led to any relief to the gout patients.
Treatment:To real treatment of gout starts with ensuring that all the orifices of the body, which expel waste and morbid matter, are activated to do their work properly. The patient should breathe fresh air, so that oxygen is available to him in larger quantities cleansing his blood of poisonous humours. The gout patient must increase his intake of water to produce more urine. He should take lukewarm water in the morning and evening mixed with the juice of mine. The pores of the skin should be activated by a cold bath every day and drying of the body with vigorous rubbing with the palms of the hand. If the pain in the joints is too severe and the patient is unable to massage his body himself, he should seek somebody else’s help. Sun bathing should be undertaken to produce sweat. The head may be covered with a wet towel to save it from excessive heat of the sun. Spending half an hour in the sun will activate the sweat glands. A cold bath is recommended after a sunbath; if the patient does not feel equal to it, he would be better advised to wipe his body with a wet towel. Sun bathing should be done no more than thrice in a week. If there is no sun, sweat should be induced by a steam bath or by merely soaking one’s feet in hot water.
The food should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables-substances, which do not stick to the intestines. Fruits, which can be taken without peeling, should be taken. In the beginning of the treatment, the best course would be to live on fruit juices. That would give some rest to the intestines. Fruits recommended are: oranges, grape fruit, pineapple, raspberry and pear. Vegetables like the various gourds, cabbage, tomatoes and greens are the best. The more chronic the disease, the greater should be the period for which the patient should live on fruits and vegetables.
After a five-day period during which only fruits and vegetables are taken, milk should be added to the diet. It should preferably be boiled and taken in quantities of 250 to 500 millilitres at one time. Bread should be taken only after a fortnight of living on fruits and vegetables. Potatoes can replace bread with advantages as they contain more alkaline matter.
Hot fomentation should be undertaken to reduce the pain in the joints. About 75 grammes of salt should be added to one litre of hot water for fomentation. The site of fomentation should be washed with cold water later on. Those who suffer from a constant pain should apply a paste of raw potatoes ground fine on the affected joints. The paste should be allowed to remain for some hours.

Pet Health: Holistic and Alternative Medicine for Dogs & Cats
Posted by admin on Oct 6, 2009
Research has shown that health is influenced by physical, mental, and emotional factors.
Holistic medicine includes an evaluation of diet, emotions, behavior, and lifestyle, in addition to the routine physical exam. Holistic Medicine is also
called Alternative Medicine and is an approach that deals with the whole patient, not just the presenting complaint.
The veterinarian will need to know as much as possible about your pet’s environment. History taking will include your dog’s living arrangements as well as past medical problems and treatments. Owners need to be prepared to answer questions concerning their pets fears, food preferences and emotions. The time of day a problem occurs is also an important factor in making a diagnosis. Vets will take extra time to discuss how to monitor results of specific therapies and how to determine whether or not certain environmental factors are influencing their pet’s health.
HERBALISM
Using plants and herbs for medicinal purposes is an ancient practice. You can cut up fresh herbs and mix them into the food, or use the liquid “tincture” form, which is the most potent and the best choice in most cases. Herbs can be used externally as dips and tonics for skin problems. They also have unique properties when it comes to stimulating the immune system for diseases like cancer that are largely un-treatable by traditional methods.
Certain herbs are potentially toxic at any dose and should be avoided. These include: Chaparral, Comfrey, Pennyroyal, Garlic, Tea Tree and Mahuang.
HOMEOPATHY
Homeopathists believe that giving an extremely dilute form of a substance similar to the one causing the symptoms, stimulates the body to overcome the illness itself. The remedies used are all natural and are derived from plants, minerals, or animal products. They are precisely diluted one part to 90 parts alcohol then vigorously shaken to become activated. The more dilute the remedy, the stronger it gets and the more intrinsic energy it releases. This energy rebalances the body’s “vital force” or “chi”, which stimulates the body’s immune system to heal itself.
You can buy most homeopathic remedies in a specific strength. The number after the name indicates the strength, for example, Arsenica album 6c. The remedies can be given as pellets or crushed to powder and given by mouth. They must be handled and given according to specific guidelines as they can easily become inactivated.
Homeopathic remedies are compatible with nutritional and chiropractic therapies. However, they should not be used with acupuncture or strong herbal tintures because they can inactivate each other. Working with a homepathic vet is essential for successful therapy.
OTHER ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES
There are many more alternative therapies than those described here including Aromatherapy, Detoxification, Magnetic Field Therapy and Energetic Therapies like Reiki. As traditional research continues to uncover the efficiency of these treatments, more will find their way into mainstream veterinary medicine.
FLOWER ESSENCES
Flower essences are diluted flower preparations that are used to treat behavioral problems, fears and other psychological problems, especially those associated with stress. They help to rebalance mental and emotional well-being. Originally, Edward Bach, a British physician in the 1930’s, developed 38 different flower essences, each of which was used to rebalance a different emotional situation. These essences are therefore also called Bach Flower Remedies.
Rescue Remedy is one of the most popular. It is a mixture of five flower essences and is commonly used after a physical or emotional trauma or a stressful situation. For example, with a dog stressed by a major change in his or her home life, two drops in or on the mouth or tongue two to three times daily is often an effective remedy. You can also put two to three drops into the water bowl. Most dogs relax and adjust to the change more easily.
ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is the insertion of needles into specific body points to stimulate the body’s immune system to heal itself. It is used to relieve pain caused by arthritic conditions like Hip Dysplasia and Spinal Disc Disease as well as skin allergies, Chronic Bowel Diseases and nervous disorders including Epilepsy. The relief is generally temporary and several treatments are often needed for positive results.
CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Chiropractic Care involves manipulating the spinal cord to adjust misplaced vertebrae that may be impinging on nerves and impeding movement. It can be useful to relieve musculoskeletal pain resulting from trauma and arthritis as well as other degenerative processes affecting the spine, joints, and bony skeleton.
Naturopaths believe that diseases are caused by a buildup of toxins in the body. They recommend a regime of good nutrition and exercise combined with bathing, massage, and sunshine.
GLANDULAR THERAPY
These are biologically active nutritional supplements given as treats or mixed with food. Many contain glands from hormone secreting organs, such as the thyroid, and are used to stimulate a weakened gland to function normally. These are very safe.

Vedic Astrology Lesson 13
The Moon’s orbit and the earth’s orbit intersect and these two intersecting points are known as North Node ( Rahu ) and the South Node ( Ketu ). These orbits differ by 8 degrees. They are mathematical points which influence human behaviour. Hence great importance has been assigned to these Nodes in Vedic Astrology. The role of the North Node ( Rahu ) in Horoscopy
North Node’s Effects in the 12 Houses
Rahu in the Ascendant
Rahu in the Ascendant makes one disease-prone and lazy. Will lack mercy, wealth, happiness, righteousness & happiness from children. Wont have much longevity. Will be subject to the temptations of the flesh. But if Rahu is in the signs of Cancer, Taurus or Aries, these effects will be invalid as he is powerful in these signs.
Rahu in the Second House
Will have less wealth. May be sunk in debts. Will be diplomatic but then diplomacy is a dignified form of concealed hypocrisy. Will be anger-prone. May have diseases on the face. All malefic planets in the second are adverse for wealth.
Rahu in the Third House
Will have a high opinion of oneself. Will have the power of attraction. Will be liberal and spendthrift. This postion of the North Node confers good longevity as the Upachayas ( 3,6, 10 & 11 houses are good for malefics ). This also is a Kubera Yoga – a position for wealth.
Rahu in the Fourth House
Medical Astrology postulates that heart may be afflicted if any malefic is posited in the fourth. ( As the Fourth House rules the heart ). Will be devoid of happiness, landed properties, relatives and conveyances. All relatives will become your enemies. This position of the North Node is detrimental to getting legacy from mother.
Rahu in the Fifth House
Will have less progeny, only one son. Will be anger-prone. Will be abandoned by relatives. Will lack guts needed for success. Will be selfish and self-oriented.
Rahu in the Sixth House
Medical Astrology postulates that if a malefic is posited in the sixth, stomach disorders will haunt the native. Will have prosperity and along with prosperity, enemies. Will be virtuous, Will be famous, Will have good digestive power. Will be victorious but will have to face enemy trouble. Will be a commander and will be skilled in combat. Will be a lord with a lot of subordinates. Digestive tract disorders indicated. High longevity indicated.
Rahu in the Seventh House
Will be a spendthrift ignoring economic prudence. Will lack general happiness and intelligence. Will give priority to liberty. Will be disease-prone. Will be devoid of marital happiness. Will have to face humiliation. May be insulted by women. Body may be tormented by illhealth. Will be travelling a lot.
Rahu in the Eighth House
Will be subject to persecution and calumny. Will have less longevity. Will lack happinessfromprogeny. This position of the North Node indicates Karmic backlog. Will be devoid of relatives and wealth. Will be melancholic & sorrowful. Will be quarrelsome and will be fastidious. Will have to face defeat in many situations.
Rahu in the Ninth House
This is a Raja Yoga ( regal power ) causing Rahu. Napolean had this yoga ( Libra rising, Rahu in Gemini ). Will have wealth, relatives and sons. Will have reverence for the preceptors and devotion to spiritual people. May harm the father. Will be devoid of Dharma. Will be a misogynist.
Rahu in the Tenth House
Will be famous and endowed with professional skill. Will be fond of war and the battlefield. Will not hesitate to do evil acts. Will be adventurous and will have a lot of consorts. This dominance of Rahu on the Meridien is capable of conferring regal status, knowledge and valour.
Rahu in the Eleventh House
Will be wealthy with high education. Will have good longevity and a lot of good subordinates. Will have high professional skill. Will be strong and will be prosperous Will have high longevity and humble. Will enjoy all comforts.
Rahu in the Twelfth House
Will be averse to committing sins publicly. Will be subject to health hazards. Will have eye troubles and will be devoid of sons & wealth. Will be weak and may fall from profession. This adverse position of Rahu is not good from the perspective of profession as a fall is imminent.

Astrology , Holistic Medicine & Ayurveda
Holistic medicine postulates that the responsibility for healthcare rests in the patient’s hands because that is where the knowledge and control of the variables lie ( diet, stress, exercise, genetics, emotion & medication).
The Five Levels of Being – The Yogic Model
These are the five concentric sheaths enveloping the Self, the Divine Spark in man !
1. Physical Sheath ( Annamaya Kosha )
2. Vital Sheath ( Pranamaya Kosha )
3. Mental Sheath ( Manomaya Kosha )
4. Intellectual Sheath ( Vijnanamaya Kosha )
5. Bliss Sheath ( Anandamaya Kosha )
Disease is the imbalance in any of the three lower sheaths of existence – physical, vital & mental. The microcosm & the macrocosm are are in unbroken communion with each other & are structured on the same pattern. At the level of the physical sheath, food, water & oxygen enter the microcosm and Co2, waste products etc return to the macrocosm. This is true of other sheaths also. The individual cannot exist independent of the cosmos. The interdependence of the Microcosm & the Macrocosm is known in Classical Philosophy as the Bio-Cosmic tieup. If the exchange between the physical sheath and the physical world around it is defective, the body will become ill, and death will result if it is stopped altogether.

Vedic Holistic Medicine is Ayurveda and its prophylactic aspect is naturopathy. All non-veg food is acidic and the alkaline food which is needed for the body is that which cometh from Nature. So if we live in rhythm with Natural Law, no disease can visit us.

Astrology & Yoga Therapy
The approach of Yoga Therapy is based on the holistic concept of human being; the five ” sheaths ” of existence of which the physical sheath ( Annamaya Kosha ) is only the first. The second is the Vital Sheath ( Pranamaya Kosha ), that is made up of the Vital Energy called Prana which flows through invisible channels called Nadis. The third is the Mental Sheath ( Manomaya Kosha ) The fourth is the Intellectual Sheath ( Vijnanamaya Kosha ) and the final sheath is the Bliss Sheath ( Ananda Maya Kosha ). The Bliss Sheath is found to consist of the positive energy associated with the Divine Self. It is from this sheath that the inner peace characteristic of true Bliss emanates.

Astrology & Occult Vibratory Chemistry ( Tantra )
A different but parallel model of human personality was developed by the Tantras. Whereas the Upanishads speak of Five Sheaths or Koshas, the Tantras speak of six chakras. These Chakras are ( in ascending order)
1. Root Chakra ( Muladhara )
2. Anal Chakra ( Manipura )
3. Solar Plexus Chakra ( Swadhistana )
4. Heart Chakra ( Anahata )
5. Throat Chakra ( Vishuddhi )
6. Eyebrow Chakra ( Ajna )
Life is regarded as the unfolding of the Self at six different levels of consciousness known as Chakras in the magnificent Tantric Model. In mundane people the unfolding takes place only at the first three chakras which represent procreation, metabolism & speech; the higher three chakras remain latent. The awakening of the higher chakras results in the unfolding and fulfillment of Life Divine. When the Kundalini, the Serpentine Power inherent in humans, rises from the Root Chakra ( Muladhara ) to the Crown Chakra ( Sahasrara ), man achieves Cosmic Consciousness. The Spirit shall take up the human play The earthly life become the Life Divine!

Posted by admin on Sep 21, 2009
Many individuals believe that they have to “live up” to another
family member or idol. Some are even envious of famous icons and
want to look, act, think and be like the stars of the big
screen. People become so obcessed that, in their quest of
“perfection,” they lose sight of who they are themselves. One of
the most peculiar idiologies of people is that they honestly
believe that they can literally “transform” themselves into
other persons.
In the eternal journey of life, human beings are almost comical
in a bizarre kind of way. Television ads tell us that we “need”
certain products and services to “make” us feel better, look
better and think better. Other sociological commercialization is
exhibited by actors and actresses — as they all seemingly have
an incredible physical appearance, coupled with extreme
self-confidence. But here’s the bottom line: not all people are
perfect. Not all actors and actresses have super bodies. Not all
individuals have perfect complexions, and gorgeous hair. So what
do we do? We improvise — and then we compromise.
We improvise with products, services, clothing, makeup, and the
like. We compromise ourselves, though, because we are no longer
“true” to our natural form. Persons who feel they “must”
actively change themselves to appear like others, is moreover a
matter of self-esteem — or lack thereof.
The most proficient and successful goal of life is to “Aspire to
be YOU.” Take a long look at yourself in the mirror. Ask
yourself the following questions:
- What do YOU want to
do? - How do YOU wish others to see you?
- What
defines me? - Am I confident?
- Am I happy?
- What can I do to be happier?
- What are my
goals? - What are my dreams and aspirations?
- Do
I ‘need’ to transform myself? And most importantly, - Do I know where I’m going in life?
There are no paradoxes in aspiring to be you. When you
aspire to be you, one doesn’t need to comparison shop for
personalities. One merely has to look within to find his/her
unique meaning in life and how s/he emits himself or herself in
the community. When you aspire to be you, you don’t have to be
superman or woman. You only have to be you — in mind, body and
spirit. Nature’s gift to mankind, is not how you define yourself
by becoming someone else — rather, how you present yourself to
you. Aspire to be yourself, and the rest of life’s voyage
will be smooth sailing.
